There are a few things that you need to know if you decide to breed goats. The first thing is that females will enter into a period called oestrus, which is their heat cycle.  In goats, the oestrus cycle is seasonal and lasts between 18 and 30 days. This means that it is based on the amount of light. Does will enter into heat when the light starts to wane. This is an evolutionary advance. Pregnancy takes five months, which means that if does are bred in the autumn, the kids will be born in the spring, when food is plentiful. The heat cycle can be manipulated by using artificial light. 

When in heat, the doe will accept the buck. There is actually a small timeframe during oestrus where you'll get the maximum number of kids if the doe is bred. The buck will know when this time comes. Some signs of heat include the doe standing for the buck and the doe will urinate near the buck. When the bucks sniffs the female, the buck will turn up his top lip in a characteristic display.

You do not want to breed goats in their first year because there still growing. You want to wait until they are fully grown, which is usually after two years old.  Keeping bucks near does, but without direct access for a heat cycle will bring does into heat and also cause super-ovulation.
