There are certain medications that you will need to keep stocked in your medicine cupboard. These are medications and products which you will use often.

The medicine cupboard should be sturdy, clean and well secured.

Only those with adequate knowledge should have access to it. The Cupboard and all equipment must be inaccessible to children.

So, what types of drugs should we keep in the medicine cupboard?

De-worming Medication

You will need de-worming medications and a drenching gun to apply these de-wormers.

The gun is placed in the mouth and a squeeze of the handle deposits the appropriate dose of de-wormer in the back of the mouth.

The dosage is based on the animal's weight. Instruction supplied with the medications should be followed and guidelines complied with.

The medication needs to effectively target roundworms, lung worms, tapeworms, thread worms, or any other worm present in the herd.

Liver fluke, for example, should also be targeted in areas where goats are kept in wet conditions.

Antibiotics For Goats

A good, long-acting, broad-spectrum antibiotic is also useful to have around.

Penicillin is an excellent choice. Make sure that you consult your veterinarian to ensure proper dosage. This is absolutely fundamental in order to prevent the build-up of resistance in the bacteria.

Skin Irritations

Sudocream soothes any sore spots that might develop on the goat.

Multi-Vitamins

A multi-vitamin can be useful when the goat is a little down or to give a boost to kids when they are first born.

Energy Boost

Glucose or glucosamine can be injected as a source of energy for weak goats.

Bloat

Liquid paraffin is used to pass wind in the case of bloat.

Difficult Kidding

An obstetric lubricant gel or Lux soap flakes is useful to assist with kidding. The Lux soap flakes are placed in the vulva with a bit of warm water to lubricate, if the kid needs to be manipulated within the womb.

Insect Irritation

Insects can be a major problem with goats.

Spot-ons are often applied down the animal's back and around the backside as an insecticide. Your aim is to help your goats fight off mites and flies, and to prevent insects from laying eggs.

Diarrhea

It is essential to establish the cause of diarrhea before medicating in goats, as it can be a sign of a more serious health problem.
