Boer Goats

There are a number of goat breeds in existence, some are numerous and others are quite rare. Each breed normally has an affinity to produce something specific.

For example, the Boer goat is a popular meat goat breed.

In fact, according to the British Boer Goat Society, the Boer is the only breed especially bred for meat production.

A Boer male goat is often used as sires on dairy breeds to produce high quality meat kids.

The Boer goat originated in South Africa. Embryos were then imported into Germany in 1983. It has spread to other countries since then, including the UK and other European countries.

Boer goats are fast growing goats that produce healthy, low cholesterol meat. They normally weigh between 80 Kg and 100Kg, or 176 lbs and 220 lbs.

They have short legs and a stocky build.

Their coat is white on the body and chestnut, or chocolate-coloured on the head.

Boers also have Roman noses and floppy ears.

They have a very docile temperament, which makes disbudding optional. Disbudding is the practice of removing the horns at a young age. In the Boer, the horn is normally short and curved.

They are also highly fertile, kidding every year and with a long production life-span of 10 years or more.

The Boer is heat resistant, which means that they are less susceptible to problems relating to heat stress.
